SPEER TRUST AWARDS $197,000 IN GRANTS

 

The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded in January 2004 are:

 

FATHERHOOD PROJECT FOR HOMELESS MEN – WILMINGTON, DE

(FRIENDSHIP HOUSE, INC.) - $10,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  For a program which is focused on homeless fathers developing their goals for employment, housing and financial responsibility for their children.

 

KENT FAMILY CENTER VOLUNTEER & MENTORING PROJECT –

CHESTERTOWN, MD (SHARED OPPORTUNITY SERVICE, INC. /

KENT FAMILY CENTER) - $25,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for the project that will enhance and expand the services designed to empower young families and at-risk youth on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. 


GRASSROOTS HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES PROJECT – GEORGETOWN, DE

(DELAWARE HOUSING COALITION AND MORRIS MILL POND COOPERATIVE) – $32,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To help support and advance the grassroots movement for community-based housing alternatives in Delaware.

 

DELAWARE LEARNING CENTER – MILTON, DE - $45,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To support staff that will enable the center to extend hours and services to Hispanics preparing to obtain their high school equivalency diplomas in Spanish.

  

YOUTH ESTABLISHING SAVINGS PROGRAM – WILMINGTON, DE

(BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF DELAWARE) - $35,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for financial education for both child and parent/guardians that will encourage money management skills for adulthood and

break the cycle of poverty. 

 

THE GENERATION YOUTH CENTERCHESAPEAKE CITY, MD

$30,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To support special programs for poor, at-risk and abused youth in the Chesapeake City area.

 

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM – WILMINGTON, DE

(YOUTH COMMUNITY BUILDERS/PROGRAM OF CREATIVE GRANDPARENTING) - $20,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds to expand an educational program for youth in the Northwest Community of Wilmington with a community service focus.
