SPEER TRUST AWARDS $127,500 IN GRANTS

 

 

The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded in January 2005 are:

 

 

HOUSING CAPACITY BUILDING – GEORGETOWN, DE (SUSSEX COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY) - $20,000

 

Purpose of Grant: To support staff that will coordinate volunteers and working committees in reaching the goal of providing affordable housing to low-income families.  

 

OPERATION EDUCATE – BRIDGEVILLE, DE (NEW COVERDALE OUTREACH MISSION) - $20,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To expand its role in improving the overall education and literacy through reading and GED programs for all individuals especially low-income persons.

 

BELVEDERE HOMEOWNERSHIP – WILMINGTON, DE (INTERFAITH

HOUSING DELAWARE, INC.) - $10,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To develop affordable new homes in Belvedere to qualified low-income families.

 

SETTLEMENT HOUSE PROGRAM EXPANSION – ELKTON, MD (CECIL COUNTY MEN’S SHELTER, INC.) - $22,500

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide staff to expand current programs and services and to develop and implement new ones to meet the diverse and increasing needs of homeless men and others.

 

 

ELDER AND CHILD CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM – WILMINGTON, DE

(GREATER BRANDYWINE VILLAGE REVITALIZATION, INC.) - $15,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To support a mentoring program connecting elders, children, and members of area churches with a curriculum of citizenship and problem-solving skills to empower people to make a positive change in their lives and neighborhood.

 

WEST REHOBOTH COMMUNITY LAND TRUST – REHOBOTH, DE

(WEST SIDE NEW BEGINNINGS) - $40,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To preserve the West Rehoboth community by creating affordable housing, revitalizing the neighborhood and community-building through the development of a community land trust.
