SPEER TRUST AWARDS 221,500 IN GRANTSfunded in January 2003 The
Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) funds
projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The primary goal of the
grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low
incomes so
that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives. The projects must address
the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians. |

Projects
are: COMMUNITY
ORGANIZING – GLASGOW, DE (PENCADER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH/COMMUNITY STEERING
COMMITTEE) – $45,000 Purpose of Grant: To provide staff to work with community neighborhoods and groups, especially low-income communities in the Bear/Glasgow area, with the intent of identifying community needs. YOUTH MOVING
FORWARD - WILMINGTON, DE (METHODIST ACTION PROGRAM) - $20,000 Purpose of Grant: To provide emotional and spiritual support to youth helping them to discover a positive direction in life and personal empowerment through the mentoring program. HOME-LIFE MANAGEMENT CENTER – WILMINGTON, DE (YWCA OF NEW CASTLE COUNTY) - $13,250 Purpose of Grant: To provide funds for an intake coordinator to expedite the process of interviewing applicants enabling case managers to focus on giving residents skills to empower lasting self-sufficiency. CARING FOR CLAYMONT-PARTNERING WITH FAITH COMMUNITY -CLAYMONT,
DE (CHRISTIANA CARE HEALTH SERVICES) - $40,000 Purpose of Grant: To provide staff that will identify and train “natural helpers” in the community who will then seek to improve individual and community health and nutrition status. Speer Trust CommissionPage
2 PINETOWN AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM – PINETOWN, DE (FIRST STATE COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY, INC.) - $16,000 Purpose of Grant: To provide staff to support and enhance after-school programs for low-income communities including tutorials, computer training, character and life-planning education and supervised recreation. RESIDENTIAL
CENTER MANAGER – GEORGETOWN, DE (THE WAY HOME PROGRAM) – $25,000 Purpose of Grant: To provide a manager for program activities and supervise the needs of the residential center. YOUTH COMMUNITY
BUILDERS – WILMINGTON, DE (CREATIVE COMMUNITY
BUILDERS) - $40,000 Purpose of Grant: For a program engaging youth in educational activities through which they can explore their communities and cultures while developing leadership qualities. NORTHPORT
COMMUNITY CENTER – GEORGETOWN, DE (SUSSEX COMMUNITY CRISIS HOUSING SERVICES,
INC.) - $22,250 Purpose of Grant: To provide a coordinator to work with residents by implementing programs in the community center toward becoming a facility for economic, cultural and social development. Letters of intent
