SPEER TRUST AWARDS $119,500 IN GRANTS

 

The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded in June 2005 are:

 

 

AFFORDABLE HOME HEALTH CARE – WILMINGTON, DE

(INGLESIDE HOMES, INC.) - $5,000

 

Purpose of Grant: To provide affordable home health care to low-income seniors who do not qualify for subsidies but need services to remain independent.

 

HOUSING REHABILITATION CAPACITY BUILDINGCHESTERTOWN, MD

(REBUILDING TOGETHER KENT COUNTY, MD, INC.) - $25,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To enable the all-volunteer organization, in partnership with the community,  to expand their capacity for repairing homes with significant rehabilitation needs, owned by the elderly, disabled and low-income families with children. 

 

SACRED HEART TRANSITIONAL RESIDENCE – WILMINGTON, DE

(MINISTRY OF CARING, INC.) – $7,500

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for a program that will teach basic life skills to residents preparing them to gain control over their lives and become self-sufficient.

 

YOUTH ASSETS-IN-MOTION – BERLIN, MD

(WORCESTER YOUTH AND FAMILY COUNSELING SERVICES, INC.) -

$24,500

 

Purpose of Grant:  To promote and increase economic self-sufficiency by creating a partnership between youth and adults to implement neighborhood asset-building projects leading to personal empowerment and positive community change.

HIV/AIDS 101 PROGRAM FOR PEOPLE AGE 50 AND OVER –

WILMINGTON, DE (AIDS DELAWARE) - $10,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for a prevention education program developed by AIDS Delaware to increase awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS among Delaware residents.

 

DELAWARE FAMILY CHILDCARE ALLIANCEWILMINGTON, DE

(NEHEMIAH GATEWAY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORP.) - $40,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide organizing support for family childcare providers and

childcare workers to form a statewide association for the purpose of advocacy.

 

TEENS TO RESPONSIBLE, SELF-SUFFICIENT ADULTS – NORTH EAST, MD

(BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CECIL COUNTY) - $7,500

 

Purpose of Grant: To provide funds for programs that will teach teens leadership, money management, social, communication and all skills necessary for adult self-sufficiency.
