SPEER TRUST AWARDS $154,500 IN GRANTS

 

 

The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),

funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded in January 2006 are:

 

EMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR DISENFRANCHISED WOMEN -

WILMINGTON, DE (FRIENDSHIP HOUSE, INC.) - $7, 500

 

Purpose of Grant:  To expand the training program providing employment and short-term internships gaining work experience and self-sufficiency. 

 

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF CAPACITY – REHOBOTH BEACH, DE

(WEST REHOBOTH COMMUNITY LAND TRUST, INC.) - $20,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide staff for a program that will develop and construct affordable housing for low and moderate income families in Sussex County.

 

WORKERS LOAN POOL – WILMINGTON, DE

(F.A.I.T.H. CENTER/WEST END NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE) - $30,000

 

Purpose of Grant: To provide short-term loans for immediate financial needs as an alternative to predatory payday lending.  The program will also offer job training, counseling and educational programs to empower people into a life of self-sufficiency.   

 

EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION PROGRAM – GEORGETOWN, DE (PRIMEROS PASOS, INC.) – $35,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To support staff for an early care and education program serving the children of non-English speaking families preparing them for school. 

 

A NEW COMMUNITY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED HOMELESSNESS – ELKTON, MD

(MEETING GROUND) - $35,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide staff for a program focusing on children and youth by empowering them to make a positive change in their lives.  

 

APOSTLES BUILD 2005 – EASTON, MD

(HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF TALBOT COUNTY) -  $12,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To fund an interdenominational partnership designed to provide housing and education to families in crisis.                                                                          

 

FREEDOM AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM AT CHURCH OF OUR SAVIOR –

WILMINGTON, DE (URBAN PROMISE WILMINGTON) - $15,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To support an inner city after-school program for tutoring and enrichment activities in a faith-based environment.
