Speer Trust Awards $210,205 in Grants

The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),

funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root causes of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded in January 2008 are:

LEWES AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (LEWES  PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH) –

$20,000

Purpose of Grant:  To operate an expanded after school program for at-risk children by providing additional computer training with science-related application for children, and skills development training for parents.


DEFAULT AND FORECLOSURE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM – DOVER, DE

(NCALL RESEARCH, INC.) - $36,000

Purpose of Grant:  To provide education, counseling, analysis, and access to intervention products for families experiencing a mortgage crisis that could lead to default and foreclosure.


TOGETHER – GEORGETOWN, DE (FIRST STEPS PRIMEROS PASOS) –

$20,810

Purpose of Grant:  To provide staff for the outreach program that will educate and assist parents and guardians with the skills necessary to participate in their child’s education.


SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PROVIDER TUTORING PROGRAM – WILMINGTON, DE (RODNEY STREET TENNIS & TUTORING ASSOCIATION) - $21,000

Purpose of Grant:  To tutor inner city and at-risk failing students, with emphasis on students from three Title I elementary schools classified as “under improvement” by the Department of Education.  The program improves their academic performance and their ability to pass the tests to advance to the next grade.


THE CULINARY SCHOOL – NEWARK, DE (FOOD BANK OF DELAWARE) - $25,000

Purpose of Grant:  To provide a culinary arts training program to give low income people the skills necessary to gain better paying jobs, with opportunities for advancement, in the food industry which will allow them to become self sufficient.


WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY LINK OF DELAWARE, INC. – WILMINGTON, DE - $30,000

Purpose of Grant:  For a program offering online learning opportunities and computer literacy training to working poor women in an effort to increase their chances of securing living wage employment.  Specific target markets include underemployed women and female ex-offenders preparing to re-enter society.


MICROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT ON THE EASTERN SHORE – SALISBURY, MD (MARYLAND CAPITAL ENTERPRISES, INC.) - $32,395

Purpose of Grant:  To create and develop micro entrepreneurs on Maryland’s Eastern Shore by offering business counseling, technical assistance, education and loans to economically disadvantage entrepreneurs.


SUSSEX COUNTY SUMMER CAMP – GEORGETOWN, DE (FIRST STATE COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY, INC.) – $25,000

Purpose of Grant:  To provide a comprehensive and innovative summer camp to the low income youth of the Georgetown community.
