SPEER TRUST AWARDS $296,640 IN
GRANTS
The Speer
Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) funds
projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The primary goal of the grants is to provide
assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are
empowered to gain control over their own lives. The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in
partnership with Presbyterians.
Projects
funded in June, 2001 are:
ADOPTIVE
FAMILY COMMUNITY GROUP (SOMERSET COUNTY DEPARTMENT
OF
SOCIAL SERVICES) - $25,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide funds for a program that will enable foster and adoptive
families
to get
together and receive a network of support through shared information and
resources.
TECUN
- GROUPO GUATEMALTECO (LA LIGA INDEPENDENIENTE DE GEORGETOWN) - $5,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide funds for the group to spread their folkloric and
religious heritage through music to everyone especially in the community.
EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT/INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ACCOUNT PROGRAM (NEHEMIAH GATEWAY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION) - $40,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide funds for the program which will focus on strengthening
the economies of low and moderate income communities by building assets,
workforce capacity and business creating opportunities.
SELF
EFFICIENT LIFETIME FORMAT (CHESAPEAKE CENTER) - $25,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide a retreat setting for Meeting Ground residents to learn
life management skills for the transition back into the community.
HOME
REPAIR SERVICE - OLD NINTH WARD, WILMINGTON (INTER-NEIGHBORHOOD FOUNDATION T/A
BRANDYWINE GATEWAY NEIGHBORS) -
$15,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide a program for volunteers and low income homeowners to
share and impart skills that will enable the homeowners to improve their
standard of living by gaining the ability to repair and renovate their homes
themselves.
PUBLIC
HOUSING RESIDENT COUNCIL BUILDING (DELAWARE STATE WIDE ASSOCIATION OF TENANTS)
- $15,000
Purpose
of Grant: To fund independent resident councils to build their capacity to act
affirmatively on behalf of their members and themselves which will result in
improving their housing and create viable communities.
COMMUNITY
REVITALIZATION (SEAFORD REVIVAL CENTER MISSION) -
$43,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provide funds for the continuation of the program which will
include job training, community revitalization and development.
HAVEN
HOUSE AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORIAL PROGRAM (OASIS MINISTRIES, INC.) - $7,500
Purpose
of Grant: To provide funds for the program which serves at-risk children with
academic, social, cultural and technical skills.
HOPEMAKERS
JOBS PARTNERSHIPS (ONE CHURCH ONE FAMILY FOUNDATION) - $35,000
Purpose
of Grant: To help participants discover, develop and enhance life-gifts, skills
and abilities through the use of biblical principles, church community and life
applications.
MONEY
WORKS (YWCA OF NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE) - $36,140
Purpose
of Grant: To provide staff for the financial literacy program for Wilmington=s
West Center City neighborhood which will educate low to moderate individuals
and families in the knowledge and tools they need to build their savings for
specific goals.
IN
SEARCH OF WISDOM - SUMMER OF RESPECT YEAR-ROUND (CREATIVE GRANDPARENTING) -
$50,000
Purpose
of Grant: To provides funds to learn Alife lessons@ through the development
of a videotape documentary between
youth and seniors from various backgrounds.
