SPEER TRUST AWARDS $173,000 IN GRANTS
January, 2002


The Speer Trust Commission of New Castle Presbytery, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) funds projects in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  The primary goal of the grants is to provide assistance to organizations of people who live on low incomes so that they are empowered to gain control over their own lives.  The projects must address the root cause of poverty and work in partnership with Presbyterians.

 

Projects funded are:

 

DELAWARE FUTURES, INC. - WILMINGTON, DE  -  $25,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To fund a staff position for a program that will provide educational, social, and motivational support to high school students with unrealized potential to become successful college applicants.

 

THE WAY HOME RESIDENTIAL CENTER - GEORGETOWN, DE (THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF DELAWARE) - $38,000

 

Purpose of Grant: To provide a coordinator to plan and develop a support program at the center for ex-offenders from the Sussex Correctional Institution making the transition back into the community.

 

YOUTH ENTREPRENURIAL TRAINING PROGRAM - WILMINGTON, DE (PROJECT RESTORATION, INC.) - $20,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for a program for youth and the community members which will help in individual restoration in the areas of character, self-esteem, empowerment and goal setting. 

 

YOUTH MOVING FORWARD - WILMINGTON, DE (METHODIST ACTION PROGRAM) - $25,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide emotional and spiritual support to youth helping them to discover a positive direction in life and personal empowerment through the mentoring program.

 

CORNERSTONE WEST COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORP., INC. - WILMINGTON, DE - $30,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for a Community Resource Liaison who will work in the community to identify specific needs and problems resulting in directing them to the appropriate services. 

 

THE KING’S KIDS CHILDCARE & DEVELOPMENT CENTER -

SNOW HILL, MD (P.A.C.A. ENTERPRISES) - $25,000

 

Purpose of Grant: To provide funds to operate an affordable licensed childcare center for children from socially and economically deprived families residing in the area.

 

SAMARITAN MINISTRIES, INC. - POCOMOKE CITY, MD  - $10,000

 

Purpose of Grant:  To provide funds for the Samaritan Shelter’s program which helps  homeless people with temporary shelter and teaches them the skills needed for employment leading to self-sufficiency.
